Will this technology save our lives as the current antibiotics begin to fail?

In life things work in mysterious ways and perhaps in my life the one constant is that I am surprised.

I regularly get the news from the BBC and this morning after being at meeting all day with Dynamic Extractions, a UK technology lead company, I get sent this article sent through from the BBC http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-34857015

It is worth a read because it is something that affect us all, in fact, it’s something that David Cameron has spoken about along with many others.

It is something that will affect us all in the next few years, if it hasn’t already.

By that I mean people, family members, will die and are dying around the world now because we are pretty much watching “while Rome Burns”.

Killer Disease PictureWe will all be touched by this problem as the article says. That is the continued lack of effectiveness and development of anti-biotics. I suspect many do not understand the seriousness of this, because we have forgotten what the world was like before anti-biotics, our generation has forgotten that un-challenged disease could and did rip through communities, even a country and kill thousands and in some cases millions.

Far more than any war including world war could muster, the flu virus pandemic in the early 20th century killed up to an estimated 50 Million, World War 1 by contrast was only 17 million. So this is so much more dangerous and perhaps should be the main focus and remember a virus does not respect borders!

At the moment there are hot spots appearing around the world with diseases that are becoming pretty much resistant to all current anti-biotics.

Why is this happening quite simply government and health organisations have taken their eye of the ball, money is tight, pharmaceutical companies do not see this area of research and pay back from it as a worthy investment.

Also those people with the power to influence the situation do not understand the time it takes to develop new anti-biotics. A new cure is not something you can just “pluck” out of the air. It takes time along with the “discovery” process.

I suspect government ministers, even though they have been warned about this problem for some time, have both not understood this or have not wanted to understand this.

They probably think it’s better wait until the next elections because who want to invest in something that the next elected government will take credit for, the usual short sighted attitude.

Particularly in the current financial climate where there is a pull on resources in all areas.

However, ultimately when one of the virus’s hits and there are thousands of deaths then the tide will rapidly change, as it did with the Ebola virus, but that was just one virus, not the plethora of treatment resistant viruses that are coming.

But perhaps by then it may be too late for the millions who may die.

So where does that leave us? Well thankfully there are some people despite lack of interest and the fight for funding may be giving us the human race a fighting chance. This new technology, or should I say revised, re-worked and rebuilt technology is finding new anti-biotics from natural products now.

These cure are out there and they are now slowly being uncovered, nature has the solutions, as it has had for millenniums.

This technology is giving scientist and researchers the step change they need in the fight.

The technology has just been commercialised by Dynamic Extractions from years of Research by Professor Ian Sutherland and his team at Brunel University and being based on proven technology there is total confidence in the process.

The process is called Liquid Liquid Counter Current Chromatography (CCC), the chemists among you will say yes but that has been around for years, BUT if you think you know CCC then you really don’t this new iteration has been developed over 10 years making it as much like the old systems as the Model T Ford is to Lewis Hamilton’s Grand Prix winning car.

And just to open your eyes even further the new business is already winning contracts in China and in Europe for the class leading equipment.

Ian and HannahIt is currently being used to extract quantities of high value products from all things such as Algae’s through to new cure for cancer from the bark of Magnolia through to new cures for Alzheimer’s.

This new industry is driven from the UK and is being exported around the world into key pharmaceutical research establishment, Dynamic Extractions can also help with Method Development and even have a contract services section.

So this is real and happening now.

It is backed by such luminaries as Sir Richard Sykes ex CEO of GSK and Sir Roger Jones one of the UK’s leading Pharmacists.

The new Dynamic Extractions CCC unit is most certainly not the answer to everything but with its proven method development (in some cases this can be done overnight on the integrated software that runs the system), its scalability and its efficiencies in terms of process, purification and reduction in waste streams it certainly provides many of the answers that existing technology just cannot solve.

If you want to know more then watch this film that we have recently produced https://vimeo.com/143812822

It might open your eyes and in the end it might go a long way to saving your family and loved ones from some of the diseases that will inevitably come our way.

Let’s just hope for once the UK government and politicians will wake up and start investing in this area before it’s too late.

Are you playing catch up or are you are marketing Dinosaur?

Were you the sort of kid that at school instead of studying for the big test, you went out with the friends? We all knew that person, their days usually slipped away because they thought they had it all under control. Usually the night before the big test the opened the text book and then usually that feeling of dread comes over them as they discover how unprepared they were.

You could always tell as they had that haunted look in their eye as they turned up the next day in shreds.

Well very simply in business today sadly enough for some the same is so very true, yes school is over however , now if you don’t prepare, you won’t just fail and exam you could just blow your company, job prospects of even more. You will most certainly lose commissions, but worse still you may even put your job in jeopardy, career or company.

warriors4_wideweb__470x3680We all make mistakes sometimes big or small and we are all creatures of habit and comfort. The lure of doing things the same old way, the traditional way, affects all of us.

Even the likes of Intel can get lulled into this false sense of security as this link will show http://cnb.cx/1LezOdV taken almost a year ago to give you an example of how it even affects and infects big companies.

I can imagine that all of know or have worked for companies that were lulled into a false sense of security and then panicked for the catch-up, that really is not a good place to be as playing catch up can cost thousands if not millions and for small businesses can put them under. And there are quite a few casualties out there.

Playing Catch-Up

If you believe that buyers are going to social media, and there is a ton of data that supports this and it is growing, then you need to also get your social media media strategy and all that goes with in place right now are you will be the ones left behind.

That goes from your website, video content, Webinars, Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin and beyond, there are sales professionals who are starting to dominate on Social Media and even the big boys use it from Coke to Pfizer!

Marketing has changed it is not a simple matter of a few exhibitions and sending out brochures those days have gone forever, it is now a multi-pronged and multi-faceted approach. It makes things more complex but more rewarding if you get it right.

One of the worst positions you can be put in is playing catch up. And let me tell you that this is one area where you don’t want to play that game.

You see right now buyers are heading online and doing a significant amount of research about the products and services that you’re selling. They’re leaving digital breadcrumbs everywhere. They’re asking people online opinions about your company, your competitors, the validity of the claims they make and more.

The Bottom Line

So what’s next? There are a great many resources available that will help you find, educate and engage with buyers using social media platforms like LinkedIn, Twitter and more.

HerrerasaurusskeletonSales professionals using social media are able to connect and engage with buyers quickly because of it. Is it the only thing you should be doing in sales and marketing? Of course not! It should be a part of your overall strategy.

It’s time to break out the text books and start studying. It’s time to start differentiating yourself!

It’s a new world out there and it’s evolving fast and only those that adapt will service do you want to be a dinosaur? Because we all know what happened to them.
If you need a practical plan that will spell out what you should do, feel free to contact me and we can help guide you.

Migration into Europe is not going to stop, so where now?

Big questions at difficult times and perhaps some profound changes on the way.

As the borders of Europe open up and the constant flood of people from Africa and the Middle East continues at a pace the question that will have to be asked long term will be how does Europe accommodate this change and should the borders just be opened.

Fundamentally how can you stop this tidal wave of people? It surely is impossible long term because the borders are so vast and ultimately this “invasion” cannot be stopped without some very difficult decisions being made.

Stopping it ultimately means perhaps physically stopping unarmed men, women and children, have Europeans got a stomach for that? I suspect not, but as the tidal wave continues what ultimately do you do?

BoatsThere are several solutions none of which will sit very comfortably with anyone and sit very badly with our politicians and the media as any mention of them will mean fundamental shift in the status quo which has served us all well for many years.

However, ultimately either ourselves or our children will face this challenge because the numbers coming and those continuing to come will cause many tough questions to be asked both culturally and from a business perspective and re-adjustments will have to be made.

So what happens if we do nothing? Will we become ever more crowded and ever more short of resources and if the tide turns into millions, which it may do, then Europe will just have to cope on mass.

Would it lead to the collapse of our economies as the strain on local services across Europe becomes too much in such a short space of time?

Another consideration is as most migrants appear to be Muslim there will be the inevitable change in culture from a Christian state to a Muslim state. One can only assume in a democracy that it would be up to our governments to manage this change. It may sound tough on the “old” population of Europe, but eventually that would be the logical step as the population “pendulum” swings in that direction.

However, there already is concern from the more conservative quarters including the Catholic Church and other Church Leaders, some of which seem to have already identified this such as Dr Cary the former Arch Bishop of Canterbury who stated that IS should be “crushed”.

Also as the European way of life changes then we may well see the rise of the right, which we are beginning to see in the UK with UKIP and it is beginning in Germany and France too.

However, there is the alternative approach taken by David Cameron which is to try to keep people in their own countries by “making them better” by investing money into Refugee Camps and trying to stabilize these areas. However, area such as Syria, Afghanistan etc. , are so war torn and ravaged the questions now is will these areas ever be stable enough for people to live in.

Ultimately they may end up just being “Badlands” and “No Go” areas ring fenced and closed off from the rest of the world.

However, none of this will stop the tide of humanity which inevitably keeps flowing into Europe looking for a safe heaven better job opportunities and a “promised land”.

Perhaps there is another way, though it is perhaps the most difficult to gain acceptance. That is rather than stop people coming we reverse the policy, as many have suggested, we have an open doors policy and anyone can come.

Faithonthemove-chart-63Then we in the West “bite the bullet” and slowly turn from Christian based society to Muslim based society or perhaps somewhere in the middle.

Regardless I would suggest with the constant flow of people settling into Europe from these areas it will happen anyway, so why not begin the process of re-adjustment now and manage the situation rather than burying our heads in the sand.

In some areas of the UK it is already happening in schools and that is where it has to start, with the children. Birmingham is one such secular city where Christmas decorations are not approved of by the local council and a variety of languages are taught at schools and many schools are majority Muslim, so it would make sense to perhaps consider the process throughout Europe.

Longer term it may end up the least painful option because I am not sure this migration can be stopped or even if it could whether governments and people have the stomach to stop it.

How do you stop a mother and child on a beach? Shoot them, arrest them, put them in camps permanently? No, ultimately it does not sit right with our culture or indeed our morality, so that is not an option.

Also consider the falling populations in Europe as a hole, Germany has a much larger problem in this respect than the UK so perhaps it is the right way forward, it may even help the European economy to grow. Certainly in the next 50 years without this influx the German economy and perhaps others may start to falter with longer life spans and a slowing birthrate.

So perhaps it is time to let go of our way of life and adopt and embrace a new one, perhaps it may at the very least give our children a chance to grow together in peace.

I certainly do not have the answers but with the world changing, porous borders, 60 million in migration, massive changes in population, demographics, cultures and religions so inevitably something has to give.

Enterprise Selling is often an overbloEnterprise selling headerwn focus of most young companies and even more mature companies, often yielding few results.
It ends up being long sales cycles, endless meetings and demonstrations, unfocused business negotiations and the risk of incumbents undermining the whole process. It’s also not uncommon to start and restart enterprise sales cycles as it’s not uncommon for the customer to change the person responsible for making buying decisions (especially in IT roles).
Landing an enterprise account often brings a mixed blessing of benefits — revenues (perhaps long term revenues), key account references, valuable product feedback, etc. it can also bring a disproportionate amount of pressure to focus product development on the needs of a few customers versus the requirements of the market at large.
However, as Marcus Says

“If you want to bring home big prey, you best have a system that helps you tackle the monster”

Marcus will teach you how to deal with

Extended sales cycles
Focus on business value
Deal with sophisticated competition
Understand wide, diverse buyer networks
Reduce significant investment in wasted pursuits
Understand complex decision structures
Help you with cross functional sales teams
Crush cross functional buying teams

Remember YOUR business with a client or deal with a prospect is at risk if:

You only have 1 or 2 points of contact
You don’t have a plan for account goals and required actions
You don’t have a handle on strengths and weakness in accounts and your market
You aren’t effectively segmenting your market
You don’t understand the cast of characters who decide on buying what you sell
You don’t know for certain what the top issues are you prospect/customer is focusing on
You don’t know how much of each activity (unique conversations, touches etc) that are required to achieve your account goals
You don’t know which talk tracks you need for each aspect of your business
You don’t adapt your sales approach and communication styles to match each buyer
You don’t have a reliable system for researching a company and the people you are meeting
You don’t have a structure to control the first 5 minutes of each call
Your sales team (including partners) is going at the sale in a random fashion and lacks a common language
You have failed to understand the steps the buyer intends to take and their timeline for each
Your sales process is based on logic and reason; we buy emotionally, we only justify intellectually
You don’t have a process to develop their pain by numbers
You don’t know what their top 5 priorities are as a business
Your calls with existing customers lack structure and fail to advance you; instead you spend time spinning your wheels and watching deals slip
You are engaged at your level of comfort instead of where real power lives
You are selling based on your assumptions and you fail to check if anything has changed since you last spoke
Your internal teams develop their proposals in a vacuum
You aren’t getting constant buyer feedback in the solution development phase
You haven’t got the terms, measurement criteria and next steps agreed in a proof of concept before you sink time, money and resources into one
You aren’t finger-printing each deal
You have no agreed, defined process for taking a deal form a “Yes” to a signed agreement

Marcus will help your deal with these points and more in his latest Webinar on Enterprise Selling Miss it and Miss Out on the biggest deals out there!

Charity Budgets Stretched – But is there another way?

It would seem that Charity is a growing business as Oxfam’s annual income has risen to £401.4m, up £12m, despite the charity seeing a fall in money from its shops.

The 3% rise in total income in the year to 31 March included £100.8m from public fundraising, which rose 2.5%, according to Oxfam’s annual report.

But there was a 2.5% fall to £22.9m in shop income, which Oxfam blamed on a shortage of high quality donated goods.

Oxfam GB’s head Mark Goldring said the scale of disasters during the year had “stretched” the organisation.

oxfamThe charity said it cut administration and fundraising costs during the period, with 84p in the pound now spent on emergency and development work, up 2p from the previous year.

In its annual report, Oxfam said that it responded to an unprecedented number of emergencies including the outbreak of Ebola in West Africa and ongoing conflicts in Syria and South Sudan.

It supported 8.1 million people across 39 humanitarian disasters over the year, providing clean water, sanitation and food, compared to 6.1 million across 24 emergencies in 2013-14, according to the report.

Mr Goldring said: “Oxfam has been stretched responding to natural disasters, the terrifying Ebola epidemic and people left vulnerable by conflicts.

“The earthquake in Nepal and a surge in fighting in Yemen show that this year could be just as challenging. Increasing food prices, the impact of climate change and ongoing conflicts continue to threaten the lives of poor people the world over.”

The fall in income from high street shops was blamed on people donating fewer items. Pressure on household incomes meant that consumers were buying fewer new items and holding onto their existing clothes and household goods longer.

hedge fundSo perhaps charities need to find another way to raise money, with such large funds the stock market would look to be one way, there are some markets that are using hedge fund managers to create fortunes to keep them in cash.

Perhaps Oxfam and others should be looking at more direct routes to money rather than just relying on the old model of donations.

AstraZeneca Sell Oncology Products to Boost Profits – Are they selling the family Silver?

AstraZeneca, under stress from dropping sales of older medicines, is marketing a medication for a rare form of cancer to Sanofi as it proceeds a drive to increase money by divesting specific assetts.

Sanofi’s rare desease business Genzyme agreed to pay AstraZeneca around $300 million (£193 million) for international rights to Caprelsa, consisting of an in advance settlement of $165 million as well as turning point repayments based upon the medication’s efficiency of around $135 million, the business claimed today.

AstraZenecaCaprelsa is marketed in 28 nations for dealing with medullary thyroid cancer as well as had sales in 2013 of $48 million.

AstraZeneca, announced the deal was anticipated to be complete by 2nd half of 2015 which would certainly not influence its monetary projections for the year, AZ claimed Caprelsa was far better fit for a some illness professional such as Genzyme.

Previously this month the British drugmaker struck one more “externalisation” to help with its revenue gap to temporary raise profits by divesting an intestinal medication for $215 million.

With AstraZeneca reporting second-quarter figures on Thursday, experts anticipate such sales to lift the business’s projections for 2015.

President Pascal Soriot asserts that selling these non-core medicines will certainly aid the firm’s funds and also generate funds encouraging a pipeline of brand-new products, yet some experts are concerned about its dependence on such sell offs as there are only so many that can be sold.

When AstraZeneca stated it was obtaining a $450 million windfall by giving Celgene allowing Celgene develop a prized immunotherapy drug for blood cancers, which came to a head in April.

Soriot has actually additionally struck cash-generating externalisation with Eli Lilly and also Daiichi Sankyo.

One wonders now if the deal with Pfizer which fell through last year was such a bad deal after all? We shall see.
